There is nothing wrong with having staff that excel where they are.


Not everyone wants to be "top dog", and not everyone is suited for the job no matter who good they currently are. The concept of you must be promotional material to be good at your current level is a crock. At some point any job becomes more about politics than competence, not everyone is cut out for that. There are a ton of winning head coaches that barely "coach", but they have excellent coaches on staff to handle that while they run the program overall and schmooze AD's and donors. Bud is a prime example of exceptional competence in his current role but lacking in the political skills wanted in P5 HC jobs.
