Both are relatively painless if you don't want to deal with craigslist. You can clean it up, and drive it around to several used car dealers in your area, and then take the best offer. Carmax is not the only place that buys used cars.

I've also donated a car, and its painless. Contact the charity of your choice to work out the details. There's probably a central auction lot in your area that physically picks up the car, sells it, etc (all charities will use the same auction lot, so process is the same regardless of charity). You'll be able to claim a $500 charitable deduction with no additional paperwork. Or you can claim their actual selling price if you want to provide your SSN to the charity, so they can send you (and the IRS) the right forms.
