What's a fair remedy when a tree service cuts down the wrong tree?
A couple of months back I had an estimate for tree removal in the backyard for 3 trees total. After I got my tax return back I called the tree service and asked them to come execute the work done according to the estimate, which they did this week.
They ended up cutting down 2 of the ones I needed cut down (1 diseased and 1 dead) and then one right next to our patio that I did not, under any circumstances, want cut down, because it provides shade and privacy.
I did not mark the trees I wanted felled because I didn't think I needed to given I had already discussed it with the estimator (let this be a warning to everyone reading).
I just noticed this morning so I called them immediately. I let them know what happened and said that they didn't need to come up with a plan over the phone but that I wanted to talk to them face to face over what could be done to make it right.
Honestly this experience sours me against the whole company and I will not be calling them back for future work.
But what is fair compensation on my part? If they cut down 3 trees (1 incorrectly) for a certain price, should I ask for a 33% off the bill? Should I not pay anything? Should I ask them to buy another tree of my choice to plant in addition to all this? It was a favorite tree; I know sentimental value can't be proven effectively but it certainly adds insult to the injury.
What should I ask for this afternoon? These are my starting points:
1. They are never coming back
2. I will not recommend them to anyone I know
3. If they eat the cost of the ENTIRE job I will not sue them, write a bad review, etc. We will just forget the whole thing happened. [Post edited by typed by ben at 04/06/2018 07:56AM]
