I'm telling you, the 'magic' can be summed up in about five words:

Luke
Leia
Han
Obi-Wan
Yoda

Imagine if Disney bought out Lucas in the late 80s. You could have built on the existing brand by introducing new characters. Then, eventually phase the Fab Five out altogether.

It's a lot of work building a new brand from scratch, but that is what they're essentially doing.
