I just did the opposite--Blacksburg to Ashburn. My thoughts....

It is difficult to compare--apples to oranges. It really will depend on your lifestyle. I love Blacksburg, but my kids are here in NoVa and since it has been 5 years since my husband died, I needed to be closer to my family.
If you move back to Blacksburg you would want to be sure y enjoyed watching LOTS of different Hokie sports. I love football and basketball, and sometimes I would go to a baseball game or softball game. If y are yng enough to enjoy the outdoor activities like hiking, y can be happy with that about 7 months out of the year.
One thing I have noticed about being in Ashburn is that I can drive for 5-15 minutes and be at any shopping destination of my choice. The drive to Roanoke for most of those better stores is 45-50 minutes IF you don't get hung up on I-81 or you take old 460 (tack on another 10 minutes or so).
Blacksburg's town council can be a bit flaky. It can be funny if you don't live right in Blacksburg, but it can be frustrating if you do. Their decisions on downtown parking have rally hampered business growth.
Be sure that you have a way to find your own social group. This is easier for couples. For singes, not so much. As much as we all like to talk about how all Hokies are "family" and friendly, Boacksburg is like other college towns in that it tends to be cliquish.
Bottom line, really think about what is important to you. Make a list. Check it off for both locations. They are both great, just so different in what they have to offer.
