The Farm Bureau should be a good source of information.

Either the weekly "Real Virginia" or "Made in Virginia" programs on PBS had a great story on Virginia bee hive manufacturers a few weeks ago. I tried to find it for you on the internet but was unsuccessful. I remember my Grandad had honey bee hives on his farm years ago. He used to wear the bee hive attire and had a little mechanism that blew smoke over them (I think this kinda keeps them calm). As a surveyor back in the '70's I never had a problem when I ran into honey bees, but yellow jackets were a very different situation. Good luck.
