PGA wanted to be early in year

They use their tournament to promote golf and felt doing so in August was a little too late in the year. The tour also started to recognize that the Fed Ex Cup was conflicting with Summer Olympics golf, Ryder Cup, Presidents Cup and competing with college and pro football. They needed their season to essentially end before the end of August. Moving the Players to March opened a May slot for the PGA so the Players and 4 majors could occur once a month from March thru July. Then August could be for playoffs.
