I had one bad experience with VIN numbers...


Purchased a "grey market" BMW from a bud of mine who had already traded it into a dealer. (Basically I had to pay the dealer several hundred dollars since they were the "middle man" for the transaction...ugh!) I received temp tags from the dealer and thought the permanent tags would arrive. When the temp tags expired, got another one from the dealer. After the third time I checked with the FL DMV, and discovered the registration had been improperly issued to my bud in North Carolina. They had dropped one character out of the VIN on the paperwork, but completely missed it.

I had to visit a FHP office, and have them verify the correct VIN, which was sent to North Carolina so they could unscrew their paperwork. It took another two weeks, but North Carolina finally fixed it, and reissued a new registration that I took to the FL DMV for a tag.

Too many hoops for a NC screw up!
