You just can't find good help these days.

Just because someone is a technician, it doesn't mean he's any good at his job.

For example, when I took my (automobile) manual transmission class, there was one student that was trying to use a hammer to put his back together. These were old transmissions with a lot of slack, and all you had to do was to put the parts close to where they're supposed to be and they drop into place. Pretty clear the light hadn't come on for that young man. Hope he never works on my car in the future...lol

Most of the people were very competent, but there are the few who make it through... Guessing that was one of the guys who just slipped through his appliance repair certification.

I met a retired Navy ET (electronics technician) who decided to get into HVAC repair. He said he had so much work that he had very little free time, and that was from "word of mouth." He said too many guys in the field just throw parts at the problem hoping it solves the problem. He actually breaks out his DVOM and checks the parts before replacing them. I think his return rate was 0%.
