I had something similar happen to my crepe myrtle


last season. I figured the tree was a goner, but this season the holes have closed up and the tree seems to be doing fine.

When I looked it up, it was some sort or beetle, I can't remember what kind. I did what you did though, and sprayed the trunk with an insecticide to make sure it didn't get worse.
