Used to be Holiday Inn, rest. was Vicker Switch. I worked the Front Desk in

winter/spring ‘83 - usually 3-4 days/wk, 3-11p. One night during a snow storm, I filled that whole hotel by myself as people left I-81 looking for a room. Had to walk back to my fraternity house after midnight in the snow. Another night, this geeky looking dude in glasses was checking in and mentioned he and his colleagues were in a hurry - they were playing at a club in town. I asked who they were and where, and he give me pass. After work I went and saw R.E.M. at After Sundown (Mike Mills had checked them in). It was shortly after their first EP had been reviewed in Rolling Stone and a couple months before their first full album, Murmur, was released . 😎👍🏻

I hadn’t been back to that hotel since spring of 83, over 35yrs ago, but I had a room this weekend for the ND game. Wow, what a dump the place has become. The folks working there couldn’t be nicer, but that building is a tear down. Issues with our room, air conditioner, etc. Can’t swap us, they’re full. $240+/night, 2 day min for this past weekend, then $58 Sun night. 😱 I was apologizing to the ND fans at the free breakfast Sat morning. Within 5 mins of checking in Fri night, my wife was on TripAdvisor complaining that 1 Star was low as she could give. She made me promise we wouldn’t stay there again. 😳 Kinda sad, actually.
