I've heard that wave/wind direction was also a factor.


Waves at the British beaches were head on, so the British tanks were able to handle them. At the American beaches, the waves were more at a side angle, so more likely to swamp the tanks. (Waves coming from the side may also have been because the tanks weren't launched directly in front of the landing beach, and the tanks had to run parallel to the beaches before landing.)
