Need suggestions: Going to France next month, and want to ski a day....

in the Alps. We're (my wife and I) flying into Paris, but I'm thinking of heading directly to the Geneva area first. I think I'd like to ski somewhere near there 1, maybe 2 days. I have business south west of Lyon later in the week. Any other suggestions for great stuff to visit/see while we're there?
We'll have a rental car all week, and don't mind driving and seeing the regioin that way also.

Any suggestions for finding affordable lodging outside of the cities? (chalet/cabin, B&B, etc.?)
