One other thing to keep in mind is there are two types of rankings.


Intermat has both "tournament" rankings (where we were #16 last week) and "dual meet" rankings (#13). The dual meet rankings are obviously more appropriate for a 1:1 team match.

The tournament rankings instead try to estimate how teams would perform at the NCAA tournament, where the very top performers get the lion's share of the points. You usually get 20-some points for a national champion, while the #12 competitor gets maybe 3-5. The actual number of points varies -- your final total includes bonus points for pins/major decision/etc... If you have a team with ten #12 guys, you're going to be hard to beat in dual matches, but you're not going to be contending for a national championship.

We have six guys in their top 20, with rankings spread around. UVA only has three (#5 at 125, #16 at 141, and #7 at 197). Their 125 guy beat us at our weakest weight. Their 141 guy was controlling the match until our guy pinned him. Our 197 guy was #9, so our win there wasn't a major upset. In any event, the two high-ranked guys for UVA means their tournament ranking is reasonably high -- they were not listed in the dual meet rankings.
