A report I saw indicated that a fight had broken out among the juveniles

It sounded like the man may have tried to break it up for whatever reason. At least there appears to be a Twitter video buried in the thread that has 3 more seconds at the beginning and it shows him coming in to try to break it up. I didn't click on the link so I can't say for sure. Based on the video it does appear the fight is taking place at an entrance/exit to the mall. If he was with his family and he thought they couldn't avoid the group, then that could have compelled him to try to intervene in the situation. It may also explain why the juveniles appear to be amped up as they surround him.
