I think the thought that "no one knows the formula" is overstating it
we act like we have no idea what goes into the equation but we do - and winning by 10+ points (or losing by 10+) impacts the formula. How much? We don't know that exactly- but the NCAA has said they capped the value of point differential at 10. So the 20 point+ losses don't count differently than losing by 10 in the NET calculation but losing by 8 does count differently than losing by 10 per the NCAA.
