Sits on the west side of the Catawba River across from Mecklenburg County. Probably the easiest commute into Uptown direction-wise (assuming that's where work will be). Genuine community (as opposed to a conglomeration of subdivisions -- although there are a few options there as well). Located right between Lake Wylie and Mountain Island Lake. Very stable and decent schools. And you can still probably get more bang for your buck there in terms of housing.

As pleasant as the North Meck towns are (Huntersville, Cornelius, and Davidson), traffic is a major factor of life there. And the commute Uptown is probably a huge mess now.

Public schools in the city can be a bit of a crap shoot (and the attendance lines have been in a constant state of flux), but it may be worth checking out some of the neighborhoods adjacent to Uptown. If you have money to spend, Dilworth and Myers Park are good options for a family (and sometimes you can get lucky and find a relatively inexpensive gem in those neighborhoods). Unless things have changed a lot, Elizabeth and Cotswold are reasonable options closer in that are reasonably priced.

Great place overall full of wonderful people. Biggest down side is the traffic and how you adjust to it.
