VT acceptance criteria for new applicants

A few thoughts from a recent VT tour for my high school daughter. At the forum (~300 people), we were told that VT now uses a "holistic approach" when assessing applicants. He flat out said grades mean something but GPA's don't. He said community service is also a major factor. Then the whopper....he said kids will be required to provide written responses to 4 questions (120 words each). Spelling and grammar are NOT looked at. Responses are evaluated on how applicants fit into the Ut Prosim theme. Say what? So, a kid who can't put 120 words together into one coherent thought is....well, good to go. Man, times have changed.
Has anyone here with kids who have recently been accepted by VT seen anything wonky?
Thanks!
