Had a great time in Blacksburg and random thoughts.
NC State and other ACC teams being good is better for everyone. Recruits will like the competition and VT will be pressed to improve as a result. Congrats to the Wolf Pack.
Really, really enjoyed the day and VT did an awesome job organizing the event. Congrats to ZZ, DM, and ML on their well earned titles! Looking forward to seeing what damage the 9 or 10 Grapplers can do in Pittsburgh (fingers crossed for Prata).
VT was a few whiskers away from having 8 guys in the finals. Think about that for a moment.
The matches that stood out to me were BC's and Miller's semi-finals...those were exciting to watch. I have no idea how a 285 weight where the score is 10-9 can have someone called for stalling as much as Miller was in that match...I am a little baffled. Myers gave Phillippi all he could handle again!
The team point deductions were out of hand unless you were NC State. I saw nothing that should have warranted a team deduction except maybe for the foot stomping during Mekhi's match. I will say that the coaches I tended to notice as being vocal and loud during the day were NC State so it surprised me when they were the only team without a deduction.
There is one referee that does seem to be in front of a lot of controversial calls against VT (and I am not one that subscribes to conspiracy theories). After seeing a couple of odd calls I recalled it is the same guy that was involved in some odd calls during the season at some duals as well.
There are a couple of VT guys that need to try and generate more offense...by keeping matches close they leave it up to chance and a potential bad call to go against them. No reason to play with fire or once in a while you will get burned.
