And I'm not sure that most people would have a problem with it either. It's just that when everybody is giving up something for the wealthiest to get the largest portion of it, then the ones on the lower end have a legitimate gripe.

And there's no misconception. Tax cuts do benefit the wealthy disproportionately, unless they are crafted specifically to exclude them. Where the issue comes in is what is being sacrificed to provide for the tax cut.

Personally, I think we're at a point with the debt where we need both tax increases and spending decreases to rein it in, but you're never going to see someone propose that, because it wouldn't get them elected. Tax cuts with a debt this large are just irresponsible.
