If space is a premium, maybe a worksite saw (like the Dewalt or Bosch) would work better.

Did you say you already have a contractor saw? If so, and if it is a decent one, you might get what you need by just replacing the fence. A good, aftermarket Biesmeyer fence is only a couple hundred bucks and will make a HUGE difference if your saw is otherwise serviceable.

Mine is a 3HP, 220V unit that has never had an issue hogging through 4 inch thick walnut or maple. But if you aren't working with anything over 1-1/2 inch thick, a contractor saw should have plenty of oomph.
