The comparison doesn't really fit
The entire basketball staff is replaced with a new regime associated with a head coach. In the business world, they hire the manager and key people as employees but the remaining staff are contracted out. The institutional and technical knowledge is retained with the key employees even if the temporaries move on. That's why I think some of these staffing positions, such as performance analytics, medicine, or training, should be divorced from the coach's right to hire. If they decide to steal one of the employees, such as in the case of the strength conditioning coach, then it will happen from time to time. Perhaps, a non-compete clause restricting the hiring of VT employees should be in the employment contracts for coaches.
Contracting out is pervasive now, not just in IT but in other fields and other countries. Just go to any hospital and you'll find most of the staff are contractors. [Post edited by lchoro at 04/08/2019 2:42PM]
