I don't know him personally, but I know from twitter his brother is a Hokie.

I also don't know any details regarding what you mention above about how he got his start.

But my assumption has always been he tends to slight VT wrestlers in the rankings at times in attempts to mask his VT fandom. I remember thinking it was really obvious with Epperly the year after he finished 3rd at NCAAs, but remained ranked below other guys despite results not matching up to those rankings. Thought the the same this year with Mekhi staying ranked below Demetrius Romero all year despite placing higher than him at Vegas.

When Mekhi won NCAA's he let his guard down a little and showed his excitement.
