I don't normally stay away from any specific dog breed...I look for...

...how the dog reacts as I approach. He'll usually signal if I'm getting too close to his comfort zone.

I encountered one German shepherd in the neighborhood that tensed up and started growling as I approached. That was my cue to stay back from his owner.

We also have a German shepherd in the neighborhood that is the exact opposite. He's a full grown male & that alone is intimidating, but his personality is the exact opposite. He's probably the most loving dog in the neighborhood.

I've met plenty of Rotts and Dobermans that were very friendly.

Weiner dogs - have met both ends of the personality scale. Those that want to nip at your heels, and those that want to be picked up and held.

As for pit bulls, most of the ones I've met have been good dogs.

Once again, keep an eye on their reaction as you approach.
