Any tree experts here? I apparently need to prune my plum tree

First off, so far my six year old plum tree is a disappointment, sheds most of its fruit in May far before it's ready.

I've read I should be pruning it to make it produce more and better fruit in the long run but I have no idea how to do this. I don't want to randomly snip branches, I assume there's some sort of size and shape I should be shooting for?
