Everything has risks, if they do not want to lose you


it can mean they will pony up. If they do not think as highly of you as you think it could mean they will make no effort to keep you around if reductions happen. Generally when I go looking I don't go back to the current job and try to leverage the new job. I am leaving for a reason and money is usually not the only one.
