In my day (post Model T), the court showed the film "Death on the Highway"

When we went before the judge to get our license. We had a sub judge and no film. There was a really graphic safety commercial in the 60's whose tag line was, "He was right. Dead right," as a motorcycle cop kicked debris from the centerline. Some quick images, one that showed a bloody arm hanging out of a car window. We also had a good defensive driving course at work. I still use those tactics to avoid being a road jerk and being a victim of a road jerk..
