For Nail Biters: What is the goal with biting your nails?

I was at a stop light, watching a woman go to town on her nails... got me wondering.

For nail biters, what is your goal? Do you chomp off little bits in a line to take off an entire slab? Do you just bit off little bits? Do you bit off an end, then pull it off in a long peel? do you take multiple peels?

Every time I have bit my nail a little, or pulled off a piece, the results were inconsistent at best. Nail edge was rough or the peel went down too far. Are you all just pros at it?

So, what is your goal?
