US Soccer is in a pickle because it wants to support MLS
to help the league thrive and the sport to continue growing in the US. However, US Soccer also realizes that MLS is not equipped to properly handle the development of the youth players so the USMNT can compete on the international stage.
While the USMNT is in a tailspin because a good percentage of the "best" players are getting older (aka over 30) and past their "international prime." At the same time, the youth players in the system aren't developing fast enough to fill the void. A good percentage of those players play for a MLS club. The USMNT seems to do pretty good at the various Under levels, but then there is a significant drop off at the Senior level. That drop off shows a lack of player development either by the clubs and/or the individual.
Right now Christian Pulisic is probably considered to be the "most talented" player on the USMNT and he has trouble cracking the starting 11 at both Dortmund and Chelsea. It may even accurately describe the current state of the USMNT and why the team is still relying on players past their international prime.
