I know a person who owns a commercial laundry that services restaurants,


etc. Real tough work. Chemicals. Low margins. The pay, not surprisingly, for plant workers is not good. Barely above minimum wage. Thus, the work force is a little rough around the edges.

They participate in E-Verify. Many employees are immigrants. It’s not at all unusual for a person’s social security number to come back as invalid. When they ask the employee about it, the response is “try this social security number instead.” The employee hands HR a legit looking social security card - like the last one was - but with a completely different number and name. So Jorge is now Roberto.
