If you're there for that long get out of town at least one day


Palm Springs isn't that far - ride the tram thingy up to the mountain top and hike some of the trails. You can actually see the San Andreas Fault from up there. Then drive through Joshua Tree National Park/Monument/whatever, especially early morning or late afternoon if possible.
