Voting question

I am independent. I have voted both Democratic and Republican across all levels of Government. Maybe it is my old age or becoming self aware but I found myself not really knowing the candidates to well this time. I find myself second guessing what I am hearing from candidates maybe due to the amount of false information on social media and more than ever I do not watch live television anymore to even see a political ad.

So question is what sources of formation besides party affiliation do people use to know where a candidate stands on issues? Voting history, their political website, speeches?
