In theory , I suppose the NCAA could go that far back...
...but I think their intent is focused on near term recruits , which in this case was a Jr. in high school when the benefit was provided to his family. Million $$$ donor , pay to move a potential players family to Memphis , couple of years later he commits to that school , where said benefactor is now coaching....can't blame them for being skeptical. But , as I said , even if Hardaway wasn't the coach it could still be considered a violation of the same rule under NCAA guidelines.
