When we have painted patches, my father in law, who grew up a painter

taught me to take some of the paint and put it in a bowl of some kind, take a wet paper towel and wring a little water into the paint and mix it up. when we patch small-ish areas, we use those little black-sponge style brushes and it seems to work well. the little bit of water helps reduce the contrast between brand new paint and the rest of the original paint on the wall, which has most likely faded a little over time.
