OK, had to read that a few times....

So that would be one year they were just planning to suck it up, they used their redshirt, then were injured and didn't play one year - the suck it up year - then were injured, or still injured for another year then you can extend the clock.

Sorta sounds like that redshirt year is for whatever ails ya, transfer, normal redshirt season AND/OR one year of injury, like using up sick leave. Regardless missing one year for illness/injury won't do it. Maybe that's what it was originally intended for?
