Depends on the mood. Master of Puppets probably their best pure metal album

but I always viewed Ride the Lightning on the same tier. Love "For Whom the Bell Tolls" and "Fade to Black" off that album but Master of Puppets with a deeper beginning to end type of play.

As a kid my favorite was And Justice for All because that came out in 1988 (9 years old for me) and I was getting more into music. I had to go back and discover their older stuff later. One is arguably their greatest song ever IMO. That album had a funny sound because the re-recorded with a studio bassist or no bassist or something because he quit or was booted?

And then with more respect than I gave the Nickleback fan below, the Black album is clearly their most successful commercial album. They were a bit more hard rock and a little less metal on that album and so the metal purists are certainly going to roll their eyes a bit but it's clearly got some awesome songs. Though I don't really care if I never hear Unforgiven or Nothing Else Matters again. Almost like a good movie that you liked but have no interest in re-watching on purpose.
