Coaches have done a great job stockpiling legit wrestlers at almost all weights for years to come - with many options. I’m excited about the character and wrestling abilities of the squad, especially with our coaching staff. However, I agree, 197 is a significant concern. Smeltzer and Howard are absolutely outstanding young men but based on what we’ve seen thus far, I’m not convinced either as being able to solidify the lineup at 197 at this point. I certainly hope they prove otherwise, but a grad transfer/transfer or blue chip recruit would help - or a possible Borst drop to 197 (but he may not be able to at this point and Catka could redshirt his first year anyway). Unless I’m forgetting someone, to a certain extent, 184 with Bolen a junior next year is also a bit of a future concern. Ulrey has dropped to 162 this year. Fisher is another great young man and while his results are solid, he has had a tough time grabbing a win against anyone ranked above him in tourneys the last few years. Warden is tough and has potential as well - maybe he’ll blossom to the “next level”. Perhaps our coaching staff can help these young men continue to improve.
