Our criteria is being driven by 1) Sits higher. 2) 4WD/AWD (Rochester, NY)

3) Safety, 4) MPG, 5) Price.

Then the rest of the criteria kick in.

For me, the leaders are (just based on paper / online viewing and reviews) the Forester and the CX-5. Most reviews I've read in this class/category have those 2 at the top of the list, with generally speaking the Forester being "Better value" and better in bad conditions, but also being the "Rational Choice", which is something I sometimes DON'T like as much.

The CX-5 rates pretty much as good as the Forester, but looks and feels more luxurious. And if you DO go for a lot of options, then "Better Value" becomes a very close contest.

Then there are 10 to 12 other choices, none of which would be bad choices. Lot's of good options in this category.
