I almost killed the man once. Seriously.


He was playing at what used to be called "Red River Rib Co." restaurant on West Broad St Richmond. The restaurant was at the bottom of a very steep slope entering the restaurant parking area off the street. In my mid1980s VW Jetta and on a thick sheet of ice, we sledded out of control towards the lot picking up speed. Thompson was crossing the lane, carrying his equipment. His eyes got big and he dove out of the way into a snow drift, missing my bumper by the slimmest of margins. We were screaming, he was screaming, but disaster avoided. I thought he was a goner.

During his set he acknowledged we had no control but no fault. It was close.
