Yeah, RPI is close to a glorified strength of schedule ranking.


Your actual wins and losses count at just over 25%. So if you're an extremely dominant wrestler with relatively weak competition, you will be undervalued.

My favorite example about why RPI sucks. Let's assume that the coronavirus shuts down almost all travel and VT decided to have a long series of matches with nearby VMI to keep sharp. Our 184 Hunter Bolen (#4 in Wrestlestat) has 30 matches against Max Gallahan (#156) and wins them all with 26 pins, 3 tech falls, and a major.

If you apply the formula:

(Win%*0.25) + (OppWin%*0.50) + (OppOppWin%*0.25)

Bolen's ranking is:

(100% * 0.25) + (0% * 0.50) + (100% * 0.25)
= 50%

Gallahan's is:

(0% * 0.25) + (100% * 0.50) + (0% * 0.25)

which is also 50%. So the RPI says he's every bit as good as Bolen!
