Some Stats to go with the memories
Eight Hokie regulars had batting averages of .298 or better, led by Meredith Slaw at .409 and Jayme Bailey at .385. Kelsey Bennett led the team in RBIs with 25 and tied Grace Chavez for the home run lead with 7.
Kelsey Brown added unbelievable speed to the team and stole 18 bases. Maddie Banks played some of the best shortstop I have ever seen and hit .340. Mackenzie Lawter became a rock behind the plate, threw out 5 baserunners, and also hit. 340.
Darby Trull hit .338 and patrolled center field like Wille Mays. And Senior Olivia Lattin and Junior Al Velazquez provided leadership that was invaluable to this team’s success.
And then there were the freshmen that just blended in effortlessly. The Whitley twins, Ansley and Ashley, Kate Kobayashi, Maddie Roundtree, and Grayson Cruce, got over 20 starts between them and Molly Jacobson didn’t allow a run in her 3 innings pitched. And Georgia Blair, Rebecca Lutowig, Kaleigh Addington, and Keara Napoli all stepped in when their number was called and were the ultimate team players.
Speaking of freshmen, Kaylee Hewitt stepped in and filled a huge void in the circle, starting 8 games and striking out 37 in 40 innings. She threw her first career no hitter against North Carolina A&T on February 5th.
And then there was Keely Rochard, who almost becoming un-hittable when the season was suspended. She started 16 games for the Hokies and struck out 10 or more in 11 of those. In her last 80.1 innings pitched (after the Missouri game), she gave up THREE earned runs, 26 hits, struck out 123, and walked just 13. If you’re wondering, her ERA during that time was 0.26. Unreal.
