Most likely a tumor or embolism deep in the ear canal. But not brain.

Out last minutes with Gunner he was lucid and trying to get his head bandaging off, but he truly looked to have aged much since 22 hours ago.
The bleeding had stopped but any physical stress - even getting him into either of our cars to bring him home - would have burst the clot and the flow would begin again. The vet who performed the euthanasia simply said we didn't need to have seen a CT scan or do exploratory surgery; there was clearly "something really bad in there."
