While that's true in practice, immediate eligibility is not guaranteed.


The primary transfer for most sports is the "one time exception" eligible to first-time transfers that are in good academic standing whose current school grants a release.

As I understand it, releases in wrestling are given in almost all cases. But if you recall, when Tom Brands left for Iowa and took most/all of the redshirting freshmen with him, VT did not grant releases. Based on info from the NCAA website, it appears that transfer mechanism hasn't changed significantly since then.
