Like your car battery failing on a cold morning, temperature matters


Your house is probably at it's coldest each day sometime around 4AM or so. Your 9V battery loses voltage over the long run, but the voltage reading cycles all day long with temperature as well.

Your smoke detector is looking for the voltage to drop below a certain point. Unfortunately, when the age gets to the point that it's close to failure, it's most likely going to cross the threshold when the temperature is the lowest.

Also, it hates you.
