Kiawah is really nice. The developers left it fairly natural and there are

plenty of walking/biking trails that wind through the resort. There is a shopping center when you first get on the island...so you really do not leave to leave the island once you are there. However, it is about 45 or so minutes to Charleston which has some great restaurants and historical stuff. Kiawah feels and looks almost tropical with lots of natural palms and Spanish moss...also some alligators in the lagoons. In the summer it will be hot away from the beach.
