The thing about the Redskins argument that baffles me is that

today if you say or write the word Redskin, I expect 99.99%+ of people will assume you are talking about either a football team or a potato, and not saying something derogatory about a Native American.

The English language is fluid by nature. Words that mean one thing for one generation can mean something else in another.

Maybe the roots of the word are racist. But I have never personally heard or read that word at any point in my life where it was referring to anything but a football team or potato. And I've heard an awful lot of racially derogatory words in my life directed at virtually every category of people imaginable at one point or another.

In all seriousness, does anyone know of an actual example from the past 40ish years of that word being used as a racial slur...meaning that it was said or written to or about a Native American specifically in a derogatory or malicious manner?
