Went to Hattaras, NC last week. Buried "Treasure" for my kids to find....

I think I posted the idea a year or more ago to another lounger who was going to the beach... saying I wanted to do it... well, I finally did. I wrote a treasure riddle on the back of an antique printed lithograph of an old ship and put it into a corked bottle. Then, I wrapped an old cedar jewelry box filled with costume Jewelry with a long rusty chain, buried the box in the sand and buried the length of old chain, leading to a landmark.

The next day, we took a family walk, distracted the girls (6 and 8yo), and chucked the bottle in the surf. Let them find the bottle, then their amazement began. They uncorked the bottle, unrolled the old paper and read the riddle. Then, deciphered the clues, finding the end of the chain and following it to the buried box. They opened it and were SHOCKED!! All while looking over their shoulders to make sure nobody, and especially no pirates, were watching. They quickly took it back to the house and explored all their new found treasure. My youngest declared to everyone that she now believes in Pirates. It was awesome.
