Cool long winded story that I hope you like. First, a little background: after I graduated TCC Portsmouth in 1999 and received my VT acceptance letter (one of the biggest impacting moments of my life), I saved all my money for three items. First, obviously, was tuition. Second, was the Gateway 2000 computer, which was built to meet all the high-speed internet requirements (and awesome for downloading songs on Napster). Lastly, was a reliable vehicle.
I sold my 1998 Thunderbird SC that had over 180k miles on it and I knew I needed something I could rely on to get me through at least 2.5 years of school without any reliability hiccups. I found a dark red 1998 Toyota Tacoma in Norfolk with 3,876 miles selling for $14,000. It was perfect. Manual locks, windows, and transmission, etc. Basically, anything that could break could be easily fixed while my money was focused on getting through school. I got a loan for $10k, paid the rest in cash and off I went to VT!!
The Tacoma (or as my VA license once said TECHOMA) got me through college and through jobs in DC. She was a gas guzzler and was ultimately sidelined to new cars that I would become my daily commuting vehicles. Over time, I drove her less and less, but I would use her for big items like picking up mulch, moving furniture, BBQ competitions, etc.. I just couldn’t come to terms to sell her, no matter how many offers I got, which was a lot.
Ok, now onto 2020. With COVID in play, our vacation plans were cancelled, leaving me with a small surplus of fun money and tons of time on my hands. I decided it was time to revitalize my old college truck. Since March, me and my friend have slowly broken her down and built her back up. There’s still work left to do, but I wanted to share some pictures of where we’re at today. I am hoping to have it ready for an upcoming Charlotte Hokie Club golf outing, but who knows if that is still on or if Beamer will want to be exposed.
I’ll share pictures as more work is completed, but I wanted to share these tonight. First, here she is in March.
