I went in 1981. I remember betting my last $5 on Sunny's Halo.

I remember a shirtless pic of me with a half bag of Redman my cheek, a gallon jug of half lemon aidy something or other/half vodka in one hand, and my crotch in the other, posing derisively for the camera, half out of my mind. And I remember the game of the day was to see who could run across the top of the long line of Dons Johns without getting knocked off by people firing full cans of beer at the contestants. I remember odd statues all around the infield. I remember the sudden (freezing) storm and cold front that swept through, me shivering (shirtless) on the shuttle to the parking lot, and the original "pay it forward" guy giving me his newly purchased Kentucky Derby t-shirt, with some kind words and some advice. Lastly, I remember using a pair of panty hose to replace a belt on my Challenger, since I was broke, to limp us on back to VT (the next day).

I think the pic I posted captures a bit of the ambience of the infield, but I have to think I have a new
expectation of "fun" in my twilight years, ha.
