So, driving over to play some tennis today
there's a long hill, not particularly steep but an older guy on his nice bike and wearing a jersey is making his way up the hill, and I'm idly thinking the guy is getting a good ride in with that steady hill climbing effort. I come to a stop light and wait and presently he comes up to the light and instead of just stopping and putting his foot down, he tries to do a track stand, that is, keep the bike steady without moving. I've never really been able to do that, I can ride real slow and try to time the light but usually run out of space, have to unclip and wait for the light to change
He's not in anybody's way, in the right turn lane which is separated by an isle, but I'm watching him fight to keep his track stand. It's a long light which I find annoying because the intersection is with a sleepy housing area and no cars are coming out, it just stays red for a while. The guy starts having more and more problems but he just keeps fighting it, determined to not have to unclip I guess. He starts shaking and swinging his front wheel back and forth. Then...he just falls over.
I hate to say this - I'm a bike guy if anyone hasn't figured that out now - but I just laughed. What the hell? why were you so determined to not unclip? He could have just kept going right and circled around on that other road with no traffic. Just weird. Another car pulled over to see if he was OK. Not trying to be mean but if it were me I'd have to ask him why didn't he just give up and unclip?
That road proved to be annoying, caught all five red lights, including a couple that the next one turned red just as the current one turned green. Grrrr.
